Covington, Tennessee is a city positioned in Tipton County. Covington is the largest city in Tipton County and serves as the county seat. According to the United States Census Bureau, there were approximately 8,924 people living in Covington in 2016. The city is part of the Memphis Metropolitan Area and is located about 42 miles north of Memphis, Tennessee.
Tipton County was established in 1823. It is named in honor of Captain Jacob Tipton who died leading an Indian raid near Fort Wayne in 1791. In 1824, Covington was established as the county seat and the city was incorporated two years later. Covington is also named in honor of a war hero. General Leonard Wales Covington was a Maryland native mortally wounded in the Battle of Chrystler’s Field in 1813. Since it was established as the seat of government for Tipton County, Covington has arguably been the most important city in Tipton County. Covington is the leading city for commerce, higher education and training, manufacturing, jobs, and professional services. Today, Covington continues to be the leading city of Tipton County. Individuals who visit Covington will find an excellent quality of life is provided to all residents. Aso, many recreational opportunities are found in the city. Due to the historic efforts of city officials and community members, Covington continues to be one of the most popular suburbs in the Memphis metropolitan area.
Weather in Covington is very different each season. Temperatures throughout the summer season will climb to the low-100s and during the winter season temperatures dip below freezing. Because of the contrasting weather patterns in Covington, residents find it necessary to have both heating and cooling systems installed in their homes.
